good, bad and ugly

since I'm about to pick up the bass again i've been thinking a lot about music. Specifically the music i fancy and those that i don't and why. I've been paying more attention to the instruments and lyrics and how important they are in deciding whether they are good or not to me.
First there is music, the perfect blend is what i look for. I don't want anything that concentrates on one style merely because if "works" and people are comfortable with it. I don't want an artist to regurgitate the same album with different names and different guitar riffs. To me that is lame. I need a mix of amazing guitar, both technical and power chords, innovative yet simple drums, and of course technology (synth, computers, etc). Don't give me one trick ponys, when i look for music, i want it all, fast, faster, slow, poppy all mixed with emotion (real feelings).
Then there is lyrics, i don't want sappy regurgitated Celine Dion or peter cetera songs. There is a difference between a good love song and an overly sappy pile of lyrics. if i wanted that i would turn on 99.9 and listen to Delilah in the evenings. I want songs that are poetic and that i can make my own, are clever, and speak to me, aren't typical "i need to write a song so I'll sit down and force myself to think of one", or what will the women want, crap songs.

An Example of a song writing genius is Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria, creative, innovative intense. Robert Smith From The Cure, awesome imagery, clever and poppy. Davey Havok from AFI, poetic, personal, emotional, room for interpretation. Geddy Lee from rush, creative, revolutionary, thoughtful. there are many others.

An example of an amazing guitarist in my eyes is someone like Kirk Hammett from Metallica who knows how to shred and throw down amazing solos. BUT DOSENT have to constantly do just that. He has mastered the power chords. Or Tim Mahony from 311 who is just the same way, he can throw it intricate solos but doesn't all the time because he doesn't have to. Jade Puget from AFI is another example, knows when to throw it down and knows when use the power chords and knows when and how to slow it down and take it acoustic. all three of these guitarists are the primary music writers for their bands. They are all the only guitarists for their bands.

music i have been listening to lately and that i would recommend:
  • Tiger Army -"Music From Regions Beyond "

  • The Wedding - "Polarity" "

  • Apoptygma Berzerk - "Sonic Diary" "

    -Saosin
    -AFI
    -Blaqk Audio
    -VNV Nation
    -Anberlin
    -A Prize Fighter Inferno
    -ETC.
